With World Oceans Day approaching on 8 June 2025, the global conversation about our oceans feels more urgent than ever. The seas are changing fast, from warming waters and plastic pollution to overfishing and biodiversity loss. But amid the challenges, nonprofit organisations around the world are taking the lead in protecting marine life and rallying communities to act.

This year, some of the most ambitious and creative efforts are bringing together communities, governments and donors, proving that change is possible when passion meets purpose.

At the heart of the movement is the Revive Our Ocean initiative, a collaboration between Dynamic Planet and National Geographic’s Pristine Seas. Instead of focusing only on policy papers and conferences, they’re working directly with local communities in places like Mexico, Greece and the Philippines to create meaningful marine protected areas. These are not just lines on a map, but living commitments that help restore fish populations, protect coral reefs and give communities a stake in their coastal ecosystems. The idea is simple: oceans can only be saved if the people who depend on them are at the centre of the solution.
